Why there are so many reality police shows on TV these days?

Have you notice how many “reality” police shows you can watch on TV now? There channels that only broadcast police-related shows, and it seems there is no channel without one or two of those shows. Why there are so many police shows on TV now and why the images they are showing are increasingly disgusting?

Perhaps it is because we are slowing becoming a police state and we are all being “educated” into understanding that, using a Borg phrase from Star Trek, “resistance is futile.”

I have to confess that I like to watch TV programs about police officers and detectives doing their job, especially if it is a complicated case or a cold case. I have watched those shows for years. However, even if the name of the program hasn’t change, the contents have, and the programs are very different from what they were just a few years ago.

The fact that there are police shows on “cultural” channels and also on “entertainment” channels, and even on channels dedicated almost exclusively to women, and the fact that those shows gradually incorporate more and more graphic and violent images lead me to think there is a detailed and well-thought plan to implement the “education” of a certain audience, that is, us.

We live in a postmodern world where rules and boundaries are rejected and where all kind of order or institution is seen as oppressive, a world where religion is dangerous, and the main activity and concern of most of the people is to be happy.

For the post-modern mind, rules imposed from “outside” are always meaningless and irrelevant. In other words, rules, to be meaningful, should be subjective and “inside” us. Perhaps that’s why the behavior modification program we are subjected to, is taught using the TV, to teach us how to think in a certain way without even noticing we are changing the way we think and without challenging that change.

If we do not longer learn in the context of a personal interaction with a human teacher -because we think “teachers” are figures of authority to be removed- we will then be though by the amorphous mass media, that has no problems in getting and keeping our attention and in repeating the same message every day, day after day, over and over again.

What’s that message? Talking about the reality police shows, I think the message is that those in charge are always in control and that, thanks to recent technological and scientific advances, sooner or later every criminal will be identified. In other words, “resistance is futile.”

For that reason, it is not just by chance that ABC has launched a new series, Homeland Security USA, about the threats to the homeland security of the country. The first episode was about the “illegal transportation of dangerous animals (pests).”

How soon do you think there will be an episode where people will be ask to call and denounce another kind of “illegal transporting”? Sooner than you think.
